The Institute is designed to improve and enhance the management, supervisory, and leadership skills of Financial Aid Administrators. Financial Aid Administrators work in unique environments with primary responsibility for the technical aspects associated with student aid. Many aid administrators may not have an opportunity to participate in formal management training programs within their own institutions. The Management Institute is an excellent way for CASFAA members to gain valuable skills that can be utilized on a day-to-day basis at their institution.
The "Great Teacher's Model" will be used to conduct the Institute. This model has been utilized effectively for over twenty-five years for faculty training. More recently, it has been adapted by organizations for administrative and leadership training. The institute is based on the assumption of respect for the participants and that they have the expertise to learn from each other. Properly facilitated shoptalk can be the highest form of staff development. The Institute will utilize minimal structure that allows participants to utilize interactive small group discussions to determine the critical issues to be focused upon. The focus is on positive accomplishments and problem solving. The approach builds on people's motivation to succeed, to be productive and to be empowered to have a positive effect on students and student services.
This is an excellent training opportunity for all financial aid administrators, regardless of his or her position, type of institution, or years of experience in student aid.

The Institute will be held at a beautiful and serene retreat center in Montecito, California, a lovely village next to Santa Barbara. The accommodations are basic, coed dormitory style. Each participant will share their room with another individual. Each room is equipped with a bathroom and shower. It is suggested that participants bring robes and slippers. More details about the site and directions will be made available in early May to those selected to participate. No guests are allowed and all participants must stay on site. What is the agenda and what will I be
expected to do at the Institute?

Participants will prepare brief papers before the workshop, one on a success or innovation within their operations and one on a problem within their aid office. All participants will share their papers in small groups. Specific topics for the agenda are developed at the seminar, identified from discussions. The Institute will have a balance of small group interaction, large group interactions and presentations, and breaks for reflection and play. As time for reflection and play is part of the workshop dynamics, Saturday night has been scheduled as a free night to explore Santa Barbara with your new acquaintances.
The Institute will begin on Thursday, June 5 at 3:00 p.m. and will conclude by 12:00 noon Sunday, June 8, 2008.
Who will facilitate the Institute?

Jim Webster will once again be the facilitator for the Institute. Jim has received a 10+ in his evaluations for every year at our institute. Jim has been involved with the Great Teacher's seminar style for twenty years. He has used this format with faculty, support staff, and administrators in a variety of settings within Canada and the United States. He will soon be providing his services to private corporations, and to institutions in China. He is currently a faculty member of the Marin Community College District. Jim comes very highly recommended by those who know his work. We are very fortunate that he will be our facilitator.

had to contribute, and there was plenty of time for sharing as sell as
reflecting upon new ideas and suggestions."

laughed as we learned."
"The small size allowed me to really interact with others and share
ideas in a non-threatening, relaxed environment."
"I really feel connected to others in this business because of this
institute. I now have a network of friends from all of the segments who

environment that supports communication. My only complaint is that the
food was so great that I ate too much."
