Workshop Sessions:
Federal Update
What is going on at the Federal Level? So many changes to keep track of. Here is where you are going to hear the latest and greatest about our rules and regulations that govern our industry.
Time Management: Ducks in a Row
Feeling overwhelmed by paperwork and conflicting priorities? Learn how to improve your organizational skills in this informative session that addresses task prioritization, common workplace interruptions, time management, and office space reorganization.
Understanding Private Funding
With the cost of tuition consistently going up it is causing a larger gap that is not covered by Title IV. More and more students are looking at a credit-based loan to help them fund their education. There are a lot of pieces to the alternative loan that the student needs to know to make a better informed decision. What is the interest rate? Is it variable? How is the interest rate determined? Can the co-borrower be removed? Everybody is talking about a credit score, what is that? Let’s learn more about this loan product, so that we can assist our students better.
C Codes
What are C Codes? Why not A or B Codes? C Codes required Corrective Action. What documents do you need, who can supply them to you. Can you pay or not pay a student with a C Code? Do I need to resubmit the ISIR once I get the information needed? C Codes could be confusing if you don't know where to look for the information or if you don't know who or what to ask for the documents. You will get helpful information on how to handle your C Codes.
PJ-Professional Judgment
PJ might be what you wear to bed a night, but it is also a way that you can help you students if they have an unusual circumstance. Do you or Don't you? That is a question we all think about when our students come to us needing "special" help. Find out if others would when you wouldn't. This session is an interactive session, so bring in examples and a lot of questions.
FA 101-The FAFSA, PIN & ISIR
Where do I start? What do I do? I already have a PIN number to use at my ATM, why do I need another one? Can't I just use the same one? Why am I a dependent? Why are there so many questions and forms? We have all heard these questions and probably 1,000 more. FA101 will help with the information your students need to know and what they need to do to apply for financial aid in the "virtual" financial aid office.
Tax Discrepant Data/Verification
Tax Discrepant Data - Conflicting Information!!! What does the tax forms tell us? What tax laws are we required to know? Where do I find the information? Publication 17 will be your favorite publication. Isn't verification only AGI, Number in Household, Number in College, Income Taxes Paid, Certain Untaxed Income? The answer is Yes and No. Let's look deeper into verification and what problems the taxes can cause once you have them in your hands.
Understanding the 1040
1040, 1040A, 1040EZ….What information can we use from the taxes to help our students? What are schedules? What is an exemption? The tax forms can be very helpful when you are assisting your students because they can tell you if the student or parents have any assets or if they have a savings account. This information is needed when you tell your student that they need to make monthly payments and they say that they can't.
What is Default? Entrances and Exits
We want to help you with your Entrance and Exit interviews, because certain information is required to be given to the students and soon you will have to do these sessions yourself. Do you know how many days a student can not make a payment before they go into default? You need to know each step that is taken by the Lenders, the Servicers, the Guarantors and by the Department of Education before your student is put in default.
Audits-Quality Control
SFA Audit, Program Reviews, CSAC Audit, Internal Audits…Audits, Audits, Audits, when does it stop? NEVER!!! We have to be prepared for an audit at any time. What can you do to help with an audit? The first step is to do a "self audit" on every file. Are all the forms signed? Are there initials where something is crossed out? Has someone used "white-out" on any of the forms? Learn what an auditor is looking for when they do an audit.
New Rules for Lenders
I didn't get any candy at Christmas this year. If first thought that my lender representative was just late in sending it to me, but nothing came. What new rules and regulations are the lenders required to follow? In this session you will hear straight from the "horses" mouth as to why you didn't get candy this year.
Outreach-Cal Grant and Scholarships
What do you mean I have to take out a loan to pay for my education!!! Education should be free, you need to help me with finding free money so I don't have to take out a loan. Where can you send them? Learn about scholarship sites and Cal Grant to help you students with their questions about free money.
Crafting the Keys to Customer Service
Develop an understanding of how to build customer-focused organizations in business and academia. Identify your internal and external customers and work together to define world-class customer service. Review current research in business and higher education and focus on specific steps you can take to improve customer service in your office.
